Primary students 

To obtain their Student SmartRider card, primary students must complete an Application for Student SmartRider form (click here to download this form), have it authorised by their school administration and sent to MonitorWA. Initial SmartRider cards are issued to primary students for free, but a fee of $5.00 will be charged for all subsequent replacement cards. This payment must be made by mailing a $5.00 cheque or money order payable to ‘MonitorWa’ to the following address:

The Student SmartRider card will be posted to you in approximately seven days.

Prior to use, a minimum of $10.00 must be added to SmartRider cards to use them to pay for Transperth fares.

If students have lost or damaged their Student SmartRider card, they will need to follow the same steps as their initial application after hot-listing their SmartRider card. The only difference will be that they must complete an Application for Replacement Student SmartRider form (click here to download this form) and send it to Monitor WA.

Students must note that when ordering replacement Student SmartRider cards during school holidays, they must complete the application form and mail it to MonitorWA. Application forms without school stamps will be accepted during these times and SmartRider cards will be sent to the address provided.

Secondary students

Students can obtain their Student SmartRider card in a number of ways. This process is determined by whether or not their school is a participating school. To check whether their school is a participating or non- participating school, students will need to contact their school administration.

1. Participating school application

Participating schools automatically process a Student SmartRider application for new students and provide information to Transperth on all new students who are issued with a Student SmartRider. These SmartRiders are then sent to the students school and passed on to the student.

Most participating schools issue students with their first Student SmartRider card free of charge. Some schools may charge a fee for the issue of these cards if the card has been personalised for school use (i.e. addition of a student photo, school name and logo or library barcode).

2. Non - participating school application

An Application for Student SmartRider form (click here to download this form) must be completed, authorised by the student’s school administration and sent to MonitorWA. SmartRider cards incur a fee of $5.00. Applications must be mailed with a $5.00 cheque or money order payable to ‘MonitorWA’ to the following address:

3. Online application

If a student’s school is involved in the online student SmartRider program, their SmartRider card can be ordered online and paid for by credit card.

To see if a school is involved in this online program, visit www.idcards.monitorwa.com.au.

If a student’s school is listed, their first name, surname, and date of birth will need to be entered. If the student’s details are found, they will be taken directly to the secure credit card payment system. If not found, students will be prompted to enter all required information before entering the payment section.

The SmartRider card will be produced and sent directly to the school, the school will check the card holder is still a current student and provide the student with their SmartRider card. 

Please note:

Interstate primary and secondary students 

Interstate primary and secondary students may purchase a Tertiary SmartRider card for $5.00. Interstate students are not eligible for the 50 cent student fare.

The card will be programmed to be charged concession fares for a period not more than 8 weeks.

To purchase a Tertiary SmartRider card, students must provide proof of current student concession entitlement by an eastern states authority and complete an Application for Tertiary SmartRider (click here to download this form). This form must be presented to an InfoCentre or Retail Sales Outlet along with the current concession entitelment to purchase a Tertiary SmartRider and receive concession fares.

Up to Year 12 concession

Initially all 'Up to Year 12' concession expiry dates are set to expire on 31 March in the year after the student turns 17. Any student that attends a secondary school in their 18th year, (i.e. the year in which they turn 18), can seek an extension to their 'Up to Year 12' concession expiry by one year. To do this, the student must apply through their school for the issue of a replacement Student SmartRider. Normal school card fees apply. The replacement SmartRider will show an updated printed concession expiry date of 31 March in the year after the student turns 18.

Students at non-participating schools are required to complete an Application for Replacement Student SmartRider form (click here to download this form) and send it together with $5.00 to:

Secondary Students 19 years and above

Students attending secondary schools in their 19th year (i.e. the year in which they turn 19) or above are not eligible for the 'Up to Year 12' concession and therefore are not entitled to the 50 cent student fare. Full time students in their 19th year and above will instead be issued with a Tertiary concession. Students in their 19th year and above attending participating secondary schools must apply through their school for the issue of a replacement Student SmartRider card. Normal school card fees apply. The replacement SmartRider card will automatically be programmed as a Tertiary concession with an expiry of 31 March in the year after the application is made.

Students 19 years and above at non-participating schools are required to complete an Application for Replacement Student SmartRider form (click here to download this form) and send it together with $5.00 to:

Secondary Students Attending Tertiary Institutions

Students attending Tertiary Institutions undertaking full time secondary studies are eligible for an 'Up to Year 12' concession if they are in their 18th year (i.e. the year in which they turn 18) or below. Full time students at Tertiary Institutions must apply through their Institution for the issue of a SmartRider card. Normal institution card fees apply. The SmartRider card will automatically be programmed as an 'Up to Year 12' concession if the student is in their 18th year or below or as a Tertiary concession if the student is in their 19th year and above. All card concessions will be set to expiry of 31 March in the year after the application is made.

Students at non-participating tertiary institutions are required to complete an Application for Tertiary SmartRider form (click here to download this form) and send it together with $5.00 to:
