Tertiary SmartRider

Tertiary SmartRiders are available for all full-time tertiary students. The process for obtaining a Tertiary SmartRider will depend if you attend a participating or non-participating institution. Currently, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University and the University of Western Australia are participating institutions.

Click here for information on the application process for UWA students or click here for the application process for Murdoch students.  Edith Cowan University students are issued their SmartRider card as part of their university student card and need not apply for a Tertiary SmartRider card.

Passengers travelling with Tertiary SmartRiders are asked to note that they may be required to provide additional identification to support their concession entitlement.

It is an offence for a person to knowingly travel on a Tertiary-encoded SmartRider if they are no longer enrolled as a full time student at a tertiary institution. It is also an offence for a tertiary student to travel on a concession fare without a Tertiary-encoded SmartRider in their possession. Penalties apply for both offenses.

Tertiary SmartRider - participating institutions

A participating institution is one which has entered into an arrangement with Transperth to exchange student data on any student who applies for a Tertiary SmartRider through the institution and via the institution's appointed SmartRider Retail Sales Outlet. A card purchase fee of $5 applies. This exchange allows Transperth to keep up to date with a student's eligibility status.

Tertiary SmartRider - non-participating institutions in the Metropolitan area

Students attending non-participating institutions in the metropolitan area must complete the Application for Tertiary SmartRider (Metropolitan) form at any Transperth InfoCentre or authorised SmartRider Retail Sales Outlet. A card purchase fee of $5 applies.

Tertiary SmartRider - non-participating institutions in the Regional area

Students attending non-participating institutions in the regional areas must complete the Application for Tertiary SmartRider (Regional) form. Post this form together with a $5 cheque or money order made payable to Monitor WA to:

Monitor WA - SmartRider
PO Box 10
Westminster WA 6061.

Your Tertiary SmartRider will then be posted to you in approximately seven days.

Tertiary SmartRider eligibility

Tertiary students enrolled in a full time course at a Western Australian institution are entitled to a Tertiary SmartRider.

Tertiary students residing in Western Australia and enrolled in an interstate institution are not entitled to a Tertiary SmartRider.

Visiting interstate tertiary students are not entitled to a Tertiary SmartRider.

Tertiary students purchasing a concession fare must be in possession of a valid Tertiary SmartRider when travelling.  Failure to do so could result in a fine.

Tertiary student cards or other forms of identification are not accepted by Transperth as proof of tertiary concession entitlement.

Why doesn’t Transperth accept student ID cards as proof of concession entitlements?

As student ID cards are issued to all students, whether they are part-time or full-time and they differ in format between institutions, Transperth cannot determine whether a student is entitled to a concession fare just by looking at a student ID.

Furthermore, if a student changes their status from full-time to part-time, therefore changing their concession eligibility status, this is not reflected on a student ID. If a person defers a course or drops out of the institution their student ID may appear to be still valid, however their entitlement to tertiary concession fares is not.

That is why Transperth requires students to have a SmartRider that has been encoded with the Tertiary concession, known as a Tertiary SmartRider. This provides all students across Perth with the same form of ID for concession travel, ensuring that only those passengers who are eligible for concession travel receive that privilege.

NOTE: Minimum add value amount is $10. SmartRider card fees or any added value are non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another person's SmartRider.
Tertiary students using a Tertiary SmartRider can pay their fares using the value on their SmartRider card by simply presenting the card to a SmartRider processor to tag on and tag off. If requested by an authorised officer the SmartRider card must be presented for examination.

Tertiary students purchasing a cash concession fare must present their valid Tertiary-encoded SmartRider card at the time of purchase to a bus driver/ferry master or to an authorised officer on request.
