How SmartRider fares are calculated
Transperth fares are calculated by how many zones you
cross on your journey. If you only travel within one zone, you will
only be charged a one-zone fare. If you travel in more than one zone,
you will be charged for the number of zones you travel in. If you
travel a short distance (up to 3.2 kilometres) and do not transfer
between services (within normal transfer time periods), you will be
charged a two-section fare.
SmartRider relies on its ability to identify the stop
where you board and alight the system to calculate precisely how far
you have travelled and what the lowest fare for that journey will be.
When passengers tag on, SmartRider will encode the
boarding zone, location, time and date onto the card. When passengers
tag off SmartRider calculates the fare or the incremental fare
applicable to that leg of the journey and deducts this amount from the
card balance.
The fare calculation is made after consideration of a number of factors. These include:

the zone of the stop that you boarded

the zone of the stop that you alighted

the time of boarding
-
the time of alighting, and
-
whether there was a transfer between services within the prescribed transfer time periods.
At the end of the journey, the fare paid and card
balance are displayed on the processor. SmartRider is designed to
always calculate the lowest fare applicable.
If you wish to check the fares charged, this can be done by:

reading the card balance at tag on (future enhancement)

reading the fare paid and card balance at the end of a trip when tagging off

checking your card transactions and balance online at the Transperth website or,
-
calling the Transperth InfoLine on 13 62 13 (TTY: 9428 1999, TIS: 13 14 50) for a card balance.
I don't know what my fare will be, have I got enough money on my SmartRider?
Providing your SmartRider has a balance equal to or
greater than a two-section fare you will be allowed to travel anywhere
on the system for any distance. If the fare charged exceeds the balance
on the card, a negative balance will be displayed. This is acceptable.
However, if your SmartRider goes into debit, you will
not be able to use your SmartRider to undertake a new journey until you
add value to your SmartRider card. Alternatively, you can purchase a
cash ticket.
Note: The minimum two-section fare balance is not
required for seniors when using their Seniors SmartRider for free
travel. Transfers are permitted within the normal transfer time periods
without having a minimum two-section fare.
