Changes to Transperth train stations

The SmartRider system has resulted in changes to the way you enter and leave Transperth train stations.

Open train stations

Train stations that do not have fare gates are known as open stations. These stations have SmartRider processors located on station platforms at entry and exit points.

Closed train stations

Fare gates have been installed at major Transperth train stations. These stations are known as closed stations and provide added security for passengers and assist in reducing fare evasion.

Fare gates only allow passengers with SmartRider cards to enter stations. Manual gates are also provided to allow passengers with valid cash tickets, special passes or people with disabilities through.

Controlled stations

Passengers transferring between bus and train services at Kelmscott, Warwick and Whitfords stations should note that bus services that enter these stations drop off and pick up passengers within the paid area of the train station. These stations are known as controlled stations.

When transferring between bus and train services at controlled stations, passengers do not need to tag on or off the train. Passengers are automatically tagged on to the train service when they tag off the bus, or are tagged off the train service when they tag on the bus.

If you are not transferring you must tag off the bus at the end of your trip as well as tag off at the fare gate/SmartRider processor as you leave the station. Failure to tag off will incur a default fare.
