How to tag on

  1. Tap your SmartRider on the tag on/off icon on processors located on the buses, ferries and train stations to tag on.
  2. Listen for the audible beep or look forthe green light which signals a successful tag on.
  3. The transaction only takes fractions of a second – so you should be able to tag on and keep moving all in one action.
  4. At this stage the processor records to your card:
  • the boarding time and date
  • your boarding location
  • the stop and zone of the stop.

In most cases you will not need to remove your SmartRider card from your wallet or purse to tag on or tag off the processor. Other cards in your wallet will not be affected.

How to tag off

  1. Tap your SmartRider on the tag on/off icons on processors located on the buses, ferries and train stations to tag off.
  2. Listen for the audible beep, or see the green light which signals a successful tag off.
  3. Quickly check the processor to read the fare paid and your card balance.
  4. At this stage the processor records to your card:
  • alighting time and date
  • your alighting location
  • the stop and zone of the stop.

The correct fare and is calculated and deducted from your card. The transaction only takes fractions of a second – so you should be able to tag off and keep moving all in one action.
