Below are some additional activities which may be implemented in the classroom according to identified learning needs and local issues.

Transperth fact sheet

Click here to download a copy of Transperth's environment fact sheet, and see how using Transperth helps the environment.

Design:

1. A Transperth board game – draw model features of stations, use models of public transport vehicles as counters and include “chance cards” with Q and A about public transport.

2. A show-bag for the Royal Show or for Transperth Educators to give to school students.

3. A Museum or Expo display with posters and information about Transperth.

4. 3 Transperth mascots that appeal to: 3 – 5 year olds, 6 – 8 year olds, 9 – 12 year olds. Can be a person or animal character that appears in advertisement and educaolds, 6 – 8 year olds, 9 – 12 year olds. Can be a person or animal character that appears in advertisetional materials.

5. Free postcards available at train stations for travellers that promote a positive message about the benefits of public transport.

6. A solution for a problem that you have seen on public transport. It could be a technological design or a new rule or procedure which is implemented.

7. A fun, educational transport activity pack to entertain kids aged 4 – 7 on Transperth trips.

Write:

8. A journey satisfaction survey for all travellers – needs to be quick and easy. Think of a way it could be given eg maybe an automatic one on trains or distributed and collected by Transit Guards with name and address details for monthly prizes.

19. A crossword or word sleuth using words from the glossary in this resource.

10. A brochure on Perth’s public transport system for interstate and overseas travellers who have NEVER been to Perth before.

11. A response to a recent newspaper article which talks about public transport. Write a factual and an emotional response.

12. A slogan that promotes ownership – Transperth is YOUR public transport system. Present the slogan on a magnet, sticker, the front of a timetable, the side of a bus, etc.

13. In small groups or individually, write a quiz on all the Transperth facts that you have learned.Test your class or swap with another class doing the same topic.

14. Look at a picture of people using public transport (a photo is preferable as it adds realism) and write a story about one of the characters. Where are they going? Have they used public transport before? What are their attitudes towards and their behaviour on public transport.

Create:

15. Towards the end of the program, set up your classroom like a virtual bus or train station. Include people acting out different roles and invite a junior class to explore your “station” and get on the train.

Evaluate:

16. Design an evaluation form for passengers to evaluate one aspect of Transperth. It could relate to their journey planning, their journey experience or a specific situation such as safety during night travel.

Investigate:

17. Public transport in other capital cities or overseas (talk to people who have been to these cities or visit websites from conducting a web search). Compare and contrast to Transperth.

18. Do some web surfing to find out some world records linked to public transport, such as the longest or steepest train track, the fastest train or the biggest bus.

19. Buses are manufactured by companies like Daimler-Chrysler, Renault and Mercedes Benz. Do some research on the luxury cars that are also made by these companies, and you will see why travelling by bus is getting the best on wheels.

Brainstorm

Class brainstorm safety issues surrounding travelling on public transport (buses, trains and ferries). Example questions:

o Q1: Identify safety and security rules/issues on buses, trains and ferries: - While waiting to board? - While travelling? - After travelling?

o Q2: Why are rules and laws made for people who use public transport?

Caption the Action

CaptiontheAction.pdf

As a class or in small groups, students complete the ‘Caption the action’ activity by writing captions identifying the key safety messages for the three cartoon scenarios on the activity sheet.

Transport Experts

Break class into groups (each group representing buses, trains or ferries). Relating to their mode of transport, each group will be ‘experts’ on their topic, noting ‘what they know’ about safety from prior knowledge and discussion and ‘what they would like to find out’.
