FTZ LogoFree Transit Zone (FTZ)

The Free Transit Zone or FTZ (for buses) and the SmartRider Free Transit Zone (for trains) operates within the Perth city boundaries. Passengers can travel within it on any bus or train* for free, as often as they want. Look for this logo on bus stops to identify the FTZ boundaries.

For travel within the FTZ and the SmartRider FTZ, the following conditions apply:

 Buses
  1. To travel for free in the FTZ your bus journey must be wholly within the FTZ. That is, you must board and alight the bus within the FTZ.
  2. If you start your bus journey within the FTZ and you alight outside the FTZ boundary, you must pay a fare. The portion of the journey within the FTZ is not treated as free for the purpose of fare calculation. SmartRider users under these circumstances must tag on and tag off the bus.
  3. If you start your bus journey outside the FTZ and you alight within the FTZ boundary, you must pay a fare. The portion of the journey within the FTZ is not treated as free for the purpose of fare calculation. SmartRider users who tag off within the FTZ must alight the bus.
  4. If you are a SmartRider card holder and are travelling wholly within the FTZ you do not need to tag on or tag off bus services. However, should you tag on, you must tag off within the FTZ or you will be charged a default fare applicable to that bus service.
Trains
  1. To travel for free in the SmartRider FTZ, your train journey must be wholly within the SmartRider FTZ and you must use a SmartRider to tag on and tag off.
  2. If your train travel is wholly within the SmartRider FTZ and you do not use a SmartRider, you must purchase a two-section fare.
  3. If you start your train journey within the SmartRider FTZ and you alight outside the SmartRider FTZ boundary, you must pay a fare. The portion of the journey within the SmartRider FTZ is not treated as free for the purpose of fare calculation. SmartRider users under these circumstances must tag on and tag off the train.
  4. If you start your train journey outside the SmartRider FTZ and you alight within the SmartRider FTZ, you must pay a fare. The portion of the journey within the SmartRider FTZ is not treated as free for the purpose of fare calculation. SmartRider users who tag off within the SmartRider FTZ must alight the train.
  5. SmartRider users are reminded that your SmartRider must have a balance equal to or greater than a two-section fare to enable a successful tag on. NOTE: the minimum two-section fare balance is not required for seniors using their Seniors SmartRider for free travel and cannot be used to transfer between services.

Free travel is only permitted on trips that start and finish within the boundary limits. The bus boundaries are detailed on the Free Transit Zone map and can be downloaded by clicking the link provided. For trains, the SmartRider FTZ boundaries are City West on the Fremantle Line, and Claisebrook on the Armadale, Midland & Thornlie Lines.

* All passengers must be in possession of a valid ticket for any journey on Transperth's train services. Those passengers who are in possession of a SmartRider will not be charged a fare if their journey starts and finishes between the Claisebrook, McIver, Perth and City West Stations. Passengers who do not have a SmartRider will need a valid two-section cash ticket or free travel entitlement pass to travel between these stations.
