Concession entitlements
Students undertaking full-time study at tertiary institutions are entitled to concession travel entitlements on Transperth, regional town bus and Transwa services with their Tertiary-encoded SmartRider.
Tertiary students residing in Western Australia and enrolled in an interstate institution or studying by correspondence are not entitled to a Tertiary SmartRider.
All tertiary students wishing to obtain those concession travel entitlements will need to have a Tertiary-encoded SmartRider as proof of concession entitlement. The process for obtaining a Tertiary-encoded SmartRider is different for students attending participating or non-participating institutions. Click here to find out how to obtain your Tertiary- encoded SmartRider.
Participating institutions have entered into an arrangement with Transperth to exchange data which enables Transperth to keep the eligibility status of the student current. Students at these institutions can apply for their Tertiary SmartRider through the institution and its authorised SmartRider Retail Outlet. Non-participating institutions do not have a data exchange arrangement with Transperth - students at these institutions will consequently need to present a completed Application for Tertiary SmartRider at any Transperth InfoCentre or authorised SmartRider Retail Outlet. This application must be authorised by the tertiary institution with the course completion date filled in.
It is an offence for a person to knowingly travel on a Tertiary-encoded SmartRider if they are no longer enrolled as a full time student at a tertiary institution. It is also an offence for a tertiary student to travel on a concession fare without a Tertiary-encoded SmartRider in their possession. Penalties apply for both offences.
