'Get On Board' with Transperth's School Education Program

Understanding how Transperth operates, its role in the community and issues such as technological advancements, environmental sustainability, safety and security, students and their families will be better informed decision-makers and more confident users of the public transport system.

This is the rationale behind 'Get On Board' Transperths popular school education program, 'Get on board'.

A trained Transperth facilitator will visit your school with an interactive multimedia presentation to actively engage your students (and staff) in all facets of public transport such as:

  •  - How to use the network
  •  - Safety and security
  •  - Social, economic and environmental benefits
  •  - Ticketing options including the new SmartRider

We strongly encourage all year 5-7 classes participate as this is a critical age in which students may begin to travel independently from their parents.

The program outcomes align with Learning Area Outcomes and Values from the Curriculum Framework, and describe what students should know, value and do as informed, responsible and confident users of the system in their community.

Teachers are able to request a combination of the optional modules to suit their specific teaching or students’ requirements.
Core modules

Travelling to the Max! (Primary)

A point-of-view, sit-com style narrative centred on Max, an eleven-year-old boy, and his experiences travelling to school. The story explores Max’s options for his journey, contrasting a slow, boring ride on the freeway in his parents’ car with a fast, enjoyable ride on a bus and train with his friends.

The package emphasises important security, safety and behavioural messages for safe and enjoyable travel and encourages the development of active citizenship while providing key principles for students to become confident public transport users.

OR

Teen freedom (Secondary)

This story follows a group of teenage girls as they explore the travel options they have both to and from school and for leisure.  We follow Teena and her friends as they use Transperth services to meet up and spend time in the city, at the cinema and in Fremantle.

The package promotes the development of self management skills and encourages students to take responsibility for their own safety, in addition to that of their fellow travellers.  To help equip students in becoming confident users of Transperth services, information is presented on ticketing options, website features (such as Journey Planner and TravelEasy) and security features on the network.

Educational modules

Safety

This important module teaches students safe methods for use of buses, trains, ferries and other Transperth infrastructure. Knowledge and understanding of public transport safety is integral in childhood development.

Key safety and security messages about public transport travel may be highlighted using an interactive “Spot the Errors” challenge or the final class quiz.

Behaviour and security

Safety is dependent on behaviour, and this module reinforces active citizenship by setting out correct behavioural guidelines. Through emphasis of these principles students are not only taught codes of conduct, but also how to identify correct and incorrect behaviour in fellow students and travellers.

Security is a concern for all public transport users. By teaching security features of the Transperth network students are able to take responsibility for their own self management. Included is information about onboard security initiatives, security patrols and steps to take to ensure safe travel.

Safe journey

A behavioural module addressing violence and antisocial behaviour on public transport system. The focus of this module is security and appropriate behaviour on Transperth services. The module aims to improve the safety of Transperth drivers, staff and passengers by reducing violence and anti-social behaviour on public transport. This includes projectile throwing from the roadside and the reduction of vandalism of services and stations.

Introduction to Transperth

Want to know more about Transperth but don’t know where to begin?  Buses fuelled by hydrogen?  SmartRiders?  And, where can I go on the Transperth network and where will it extend to next? After viewing this module, students will be better informed about all these issues and more.  The presentation is a current affairs style overview of Transperth. What it’s all about – the services, features and plans for future development of the network.

The network and the future

An in-depth look at how Transperth uses technology in society to improve the service it provides. In an effort to minimise fuel emissions Transperth is at the forefront of trialling new fuel sources including compressed natural gas and hydrogen fuel cells.  Students are also given a sense of place and space as they learn of plans to extend the Transperth network to better serve the requirements of the people of Perth now and in the future.
