Primary students 

To obtain their Student SmartRider card, students must either:

1. Complete an Application for Student SmartRider form, have it authorised by their school administration, and sent to Monitor WA.

Initial SmartRider cards are issued to primary students for free, but a fee of $5 will be charged for all subsequent replacement cards. This payment must be made by mailing a $5 cheque or money order payable to ‘Monitor WA’ to the following address:

The Student SmartRider card will be posted out in approximately 7 days.

2. Purchase their card through the online Student SmartRider program. If a student’s school is registered for the online program, their SmartRider can be ordered online and paid for by credit card. To find out if your school is registered for online ordering, visit https://idcards.monitorwa.com.au/srcards/Default.aspx.

Please note: A primary student’s first card is free and can only be obtained by a manual Application for Student SmartRider form. All subsequent SmartRider cards can be purchased online for $5 (if you choose to use the online ordering method for your childs first primary school Student SmartRider you will be charged $5).  

Lost or damaged primary student smartrider cards

If students have lost or damaged their Student SmartRider card, they will need to hot-list their SmartRider by calling the InfoLine on 13 62 13 and either complete an Application for Replacement Student SmartRider form and send it to Monitor WA or order a replacement card online. Prior to use, a minimum of $10 must be added to your Student SmartRider if you intend to use it to pay for Transperth fares.

Students must note that when ordering replacement Student SmartRider cards during school holidays, they must either complete an application form and mail it to Monitor WA or order online through https://idcards.monitorwa.com.au/srcards/Default.aspx. Application forms without school stamps will be accepted during school holiday periods and SmartRider cards will be sent to the address provided.

Secondary students

Secondary students can obtain their Student SmartRider card in a number of ways. This process is determined by whether or not their school is registered for the online program or have elected to become a participating school.

Online Student Smartrider schools
Students of online student smartrider registered schools can purchase Student SmartRiders online with a credit card. Registered schools are listed on the first page of the online order system.  Click here to see if your school is registered and to order your SmartRider online

Participating school application
You should check with your school administration to see if your school is a participating school. Participating schools automatically process a Student SmartRider application for new students and provide information to Transperth on all new students who are issued with a Student SmartRider. These SmartRiders are then sent to the students school and passed on to the student.

Most participating schools issue students with their first Student SmartRider card free of charge. Some schools may charge a fee for the issue of these cards if the card had been personalised for school use (i.e. the addition of a student photo, school name and logo or library barcode).

Non participating school
An Application for Student SmartRider form must be completed, authorised by the student’s school administration and sent to Monitor WA.

SmartRider cards incur a fee of $5. Applications must be mailed with a $5 cheque or money order payable to ‘Monitor WA’ to the following address:

Interstate primary and secondary students 

Interstate primary and secondary students may purchase a Tertiary SmartRider card for $5.00. Interstate students are not eligible for the 50 cent student fare.

The card will be programmed to be charged concession fares for a period not more than 8 weeks.

To purchase a Tertiary SmartRider card, students must provide proof of current student concession entitlement by an eastern states authority and complete an Application for Tertiary SmartRider (click here to download this form). This form must be presented to an InfoCentre or Retail Sales Outlet along with the current concession entitelment to purchase a Tertiary SmartRider and receive concession fares.

Up to Year 12 concession

Initially all ‘Up to Year 12’ concession expiry dates are set to expire on 31 March in the year after the student turns 17. Any student that attends a secondary school in their 18^th year (i.e. the year in which they turn 18), can seek an extension to their ‘Up to Year 12’ concession expiry by one year. You can do this in a number of ways including:

1.     Complete  a Application for Replacement Student SmartRider form and send it to Monitor WA

2.     Order a replacement card online.  Students from Department of Education schools and registered schools can order there replacement cards online through https://idcards.monitorwa.com.au/

3.     Students from participating schools must apply through their school for the issue of a replacement Student SmartRider. Normal school card fees apply.

The replacement SmartRider will show an updated printed concession expiry date of 31 March in the year after the student turns 18.

Secondary Students 19 years and above

Students attending secondary schools in their 19^th year (i.e. the year in which they turn 19) or above are not eligible for the ‘Up to Year 12’ concession and therefore are not entitled to the 50 cent student fare. Full time students in their 19^th year and above will instead be issued with a Tertiary-encoded concession card that they can obtain through the normal replacement card process. The replacement SmartRider card will automatically be programmed as a Tertiary concession with an expiry of 31 March in the year after the application is made.
