South Perth Esplanade

The ferry is a great way to visit the various restaurants, bars, pubs and retail outlets along the South Perth Esplanade just minutes away from the Mends St Jetty.

Ferry history

Ferry services on the Swan River began in 1829, two years after the colony was settled. Using whale boats, this service ran between Fremantle and Guildford once a month. For the early settlers river travel was comparatively fast and more comfortable than the rough bush tracks that ran along the rivers edge.

In 1897, a channel was dredged between Barrack Street Jetty and Mends Street and by 1898 there was a regular service between these two points. Today the trip is swift and comfortable giving easy access between the South Perth foreshore and the city.
