Free Transit Zones

Perth city has a Free Transit Zone for buses and a SmartRider Free Transit Zone for trains.

Free Transit Zone for buses

  • To travel free, you must start and finish your journey within the zone
  • If your journey starts or finishes outside the zone, you must pay a fare for the whole journey
  • The Free Transit Zone logo on bus stops identifies the boundaries of the zone
  • If your journey either starts or finishes outside the zone, you should tag on and tag off in the normal way
  • If you tag on inside the zone (with your SmartRider or contactless payment method) without tagging off, we will charge you the default fare for that bus service.

SmartRider Free Transit Zone for trains

  • To travel free, you must use a SmartRider or contactless payment method, start and finish your journey within the zone and tag on and off in the normal way
  • The boundaries of the zone are City West Station, Elizabeth Quay Station and Claisebrook Station.

What will you fit into your Sundays with free travel?

Every Sunday, travel is free for all SmartRider and contactless payment travellers. Tag on and off as you normally would but notice that your fare is free no matter how far you travel.

Free travel is available on all Transperth bus, train and ferry trips from first service until last service.

The free travel does not apply to late night services after midnight on Saturday.

If you are travelling without a SmartRider or not using contactless payments, you will need to purchase a cash ticket.

SmartRider cards must not be in a negative balance to utilise free travel. 



Free Travel with Student SmartRider

Students with a valid Student SmartRider who tag on and off, can travel to and from school for free!

Route 292 Free Shuttle


Route 292 is now a *free shuttle for passengers travelling between Terminals 3 and 4 to the Airport Line.  

With no direct connection from T3 and T4 to a train station, passengers need to take the Route 292 bus service, which connects them to Redcliffe Station on the Airport Line.

Redcliffe Station is just 15 minutes from the CBD and a three-minute bus trip from T3 and T4. Route 292 operates every 12 minutes during peak and every 15 minutes off-peak and weekends. 

*Passengers continuing their journey from Redcliffe Station will need to purchase a cash ticket or tag on with their SmartRider or contactless payment method.
