Tertiary SmartRider

Because you’re still a few years away from making a decent wage this SmartRider card will let you travel at a discounted rate. 

Who can get one?

You may only apply for a Tertiary SmartRider only if you are:

  • enrolled in full-time studies at a Western Australian University or TAFE College, or
  • a secondary school student attending school in the year you turn 19 or older, or
  • an interstate primary or secondary school student.

You are unable to apply for a Tertiary SmartRider if you are:

  • a part-time student
  • studying by correspondence
  • enrolled in an interstate or overseas institution
  • a visiting interstate or overseas tertiary student.

Tertiary SmartRider is the only ID we accept

We don’t accept student identification from your educational institution as proof that you are a full-time tertiary student. If you want a concession fare, you must carry your Tertiary SmartRider with you, even if you buy a cash ticket. No other form of concession will be accepted.

If you’re travelling with a Tertiary SmartRider you may be required to provide additional identification to prove the Tertiary SmartRider that you are using belongs to you. Also your Tertiary SmartRider is required to be in ‘working condition’. Damaged/unreadable SmartRiders are not accepted as valid proof of concession.

How to obtain your Tertiary SmartRider

The process for getting a Tertiary SmartRider depends on whether you attend a participating or non-participating institution. Participating institutions have an arrangement with us to automatically update your enrolment status and concession entitlements, so you can enjoy a much more streamlined process with less paperwork.

If you already have a concession entitlement, you can keep your Concession or Pensioner SmartRider. If so, do not register your SmartRider through the below steps – you will lose your current entitlements.

Select University:

Curtin University

Eligibility

Students must be studying full-time to receive the tertiary concession. At Curtin, this is considered to be enrolled in 75 credits or more in a half-year period (1st January – 30th June or 1st July – 31st December).

You can still register your SmartRider card through the Curtin OASIS student portal, even if you are not currently eligible to receive the concession. Your SmartRider will then remain registered and if you become eligible in the future, you will then be able to activate the concession.

Please note that you only ever have to register your SmartRider card once.

Step 1 – Obtain a SmartRider card if you do not have one already

You can use any previous SmartRider card for the registration process. 

If you do not have a SmartRider card, you can either:

A) Purchase a standard SmartRider card from any Retail sales Outlet (RSO) or InfoCentre. 

B) If you can access the Perth Bentley campus, present your Curtin Student ID card with the current year sticker to the G-Mart, building 106G, to purchase a SmartRider card with a temporary 7-day tertiary concession.

To continue to receive the concession provided by the G-Mart’s SmartRider card, you must register your SmartRider card (step 2) and activate the concession (step 3).

C) If you study at the Kalgoorlie campus, the nearest location you can obtain your SmartRider card from is the dedicated retail outlet: TransGoldfields, located at the Kalgoorlie Bus Depot, 108 Boulder Rd, Kalgoorlie.

Once you have obtained a SmartRider card, you can follow the next step to register your card to receive the tertiary concession.

Step 2 – Register your SmartRider card in OASIS

You can register your SmartRider card via the Curtin student portal, OASIS.

First, log into OASIS using your student ID number and password.

Next, navigate to the ‘My Campus’ tab and select the ‘SmartRider concession’ tab on the right-hand side, under the ‘Student Essentials’ heading.

You can then enter your SmartRider number and follow the on-screen steps.

Please note that you can only register each SmartRider card once in OASIS.

Completing this declaration allows Transperth to monitor your enrolment status. If you drop below full-time status (75 credits within a half-year period) your tertiary concession will be removed. 

Step 3 –Activate your Concession

Once your SmartRider card is registered in the OASIS student portal, your tertiary concession details will be sent to Transperth within 24 hours. Once your details have been sent to Transperth, you must then travel on our services (by tagging on and off) within 7 days in order to apply your tertiary concession details to your SmartRider card.

If you are unable to travel within the seven-day period, your tertiary details will become inactive. Please call Transperth on 13 62 13 at least one hour prior to travelling and request to reactivate the tertiary details.

Step 4 – Enjoy the ride (but carry secondary ID)

Your Tertiary SmartRider is the only proof of tertiary concession Transperth accepts. If you leave your Tertiary SmartRider at home, standard fares apply.

You’ll also need to prove the Tertiary SmartRider belongs to you. Always carry a second form of photo ID and have it at the ready when asked. Your driver’s licence or proof of age card are both acceptable forms on ID.

Edith Cowan University

Step 1 – Get your Tertiary SmartRider

Visit your campus’ e-Lab to obtain your Tertiary SmartRider. It is issued with zero balance, so if you want to travel straight away, you will need to add value. Read more about add value methods.

Once you have your card, complete the next steps to register your Tertiary SmartRider and ensure it doesn’t revert to Standard. If it does, you’ll need to complete the process again.

If you already have a SmartRider, you can register it as a Tertiary SmartRider using the below process. Note: If the SmartRider has been registered in another person’s name, a new one will be required.

Step 2 – Register your SmartRider

Complete the ECU Transperth Consent Declaration form within five days of receiving your Tertiary SmartRider to confirm concession status. Failure to do so may cause the activation process to fail.

Completing this declaration allows us to monitor your enrolment status. If you drop below fulltime status (45 credit points) your concession travel entitlement will be removed.

Step 3 – Activate Your Concession

You’ll need to activate your card by travelling (or tagging on and off at a SmartRider reader) 24 hours after submitting your Transperth Consent Declaration.

Failure to register your card and activating your concession will cause your card to revert to standard fares. If this occurs, repeat Step 2 onwards.

Step 4 – Enjoy the ride (but carry secondary ID)

Your Tertiary SmartRider is the only proof of tertiary concession Transperth accepts. If you leave your Tertiary SmartRider at home, standard fares apply.

You’ll also need to prove the Tertiary SmartRider belongs to you. Always carry a second form of photo ID and have it at the ready when asked. Your driver’s licence or proof of age card are both acceptable forms on ID.

Murdoch University

Step 1 – Get your Tertiary SmartRider

Present your current Murdoch University Student ID card, with the current validation sticker, to the Murdoch Guild Second-Hand Bookshop or Sir Walter’s Murdoch Café at the Mandurah campus to obtain your Tertiary SmartRider.

A Tertiary SmartRider costs $10, which includes $5 credit.

If the Guild Second-Hand Bookshop and Sir Walter’s Café are closed, you can purchase a Standard SmartRider from any Retail Sales Outlet (RSO) or InfoCentre. A Standard SmartRider costs $20, which includes $10 credit, and you will need to follow the below steps to convert it to a Tertiary SmartRider.

If you already have a SmartRider, you can register it as a Tertiary SmartRider using the below process. Note: If the SmartRider has been registered in another person’s name, a new one will be required.

Step 2 – Register your Tertiary SmartRider

Register your SmartRider on Murdoch’s MyMurdoch within five days of receiving your Tertiary SmartRider. Failure to do so may cause the activation process to fail.

Completing this declaration allows us to monitor your enrolment status. If you drop below full-time status (9 points) your concession travel entitlement will be removed.

Step 3 – Activate your Concession

You’ll need to activate your card by travelling (or tagging on and off at a SmartRider reader) 24 hours after submitting your Transperth Consent Declaration.

Failure to register your card and activating your concession will cause your card to revert to standard fares. If this occurs, repeat Step 2 onwards.

Step 4 – Enjoy the ride (but carry secondary ID)

Your Tertiary SmartRider is the only proof of tertiary concession Transperth accepts. If you leave your Tertiary SmartRider at home, standard fares apply.

Present your UWA Campus card with the current year sticker at the Student Guild Bookshop to obtain your Tertiary SmartRider. A Tertiary SmartRider costs $10, which includes $5 credit.

If the Student Guild Bookshop is closed, you can purchase a Standard SmartRider from any Retail Sales Outlet (RSO) or InfoCentre. A Standard SmartRider costs $20, which includes $10 credit, and you will need to follow the below steps to convert it to a Tertiary SmartRider.

If you already have a SmartRider, you can register it as a Tertiary SmartRider using the below process. Note: If the SmartRider has been registered in another person’s name, a new one will be required.

Step 2 – Register your SmartRider

Register your SmartRider on UWA’s studentConnect within five days of receiving your Tertiary SmartRider. Failure to do so may cause the activation process to fail.

Completing this declaration allows us to monitor your enrolment status. If you drop below full-time status (24 credit points) your concession travel entitlement will be removed.

Step 3 – Activate Your Concession

You’ll need to activate your card by travelling (or tagging on and off at a SmartRider reader) 24 hours after submitting your Transperth Consent Declaration.

Failure to register your card and activating your concession will cause your card to revert to standard fares. If this occurs, repeat Step 2 onwards.

Step 4 – Enjoy the ride (but carry secondary ID)

Notre Dame and other colleges

Step 1 – Application

If you attend a non-participating institution, such as Notre Dame or another college, you’ll need to complete the Transperth Application for Tertiary SmartRider form. Download the relevant form using the links below.

Step 2 – Authorisation

You’ll need to prove that you are studying full time (12 contact hours per week or more) to be entitled to a Tertiary SmartRider. Present your completed form to your Student Administration team for authorisation.

Student Administration will provide you with a course completion date and stamp your application as proof of full-time study.

Note: Your Tertiary SmartRider concession expiry date will automatically be set to 31 March of the following year unless an earlier expiry date is specified. You must complete and submit a new Application for Tertiary SmartRider form prior to this date to continue receiving concession fares, or your card will revert to Standard. Repeat Step 1 onwards to reactivate your concession.

Step 3 – Get your Tertiary SmartRider

Present your completed and authorised form to your closest Transperth Retail Sales Outlet or InfoCentre to obtain your Tertiary SmartRider. A Tertiary SmartRider costs $10, which includes $5 credit.

If you already have a SmartRider, complete the Tertiary SmartRider application form and present your SmartRider at the time of application. Note: If the SmartRider has been registered in another person’s name, a new one will be required.

Step 4 – Enjoy the ride (but carry secondary ID)

Your Tertiary SmartRider is the only proof of tertiary concession Transperth accepts. If you leave your Tertiary SmartRider at home, standard fares apply.

If you already have a SmartRider, you can register it as a TAFE SmartRider using the below steps. Note: If the SmartRider has been registered in another person’s name, a new one will be required.

If you need a SmartRider collect and complete an Application for TAFE SmartRider form available at your TAFE administration and ensure it is authorised by them. You can purchase a SmartRider from any Retail Sales Outlet (RSO) or InfoCentre. This costs $10, including $5 credit, and you will need to follow the below steps to convert it to a TAFE SmartRider.

Step 2 – Register your SmartRider

Register your SmartRider by submitting the Transperth Consent Declaration via your TAFE portal within seven days of receiving it. Failure to do so within this time may cause the activation of your concession entitlement to fail.

Completing this declaration allows us to monitor your enrolment status. If you drop below full-time status your concession travel entitlement will be removed and revert to standard fares.

Step 3 –Activate your Concession

You’ll need to activate your concession by travelling (or tagging on and off at a SmartRider reader) 24 hours after submitting your Transperth Consent Declaration.

Failure to register your card and activate your concession will cause your card to revert to standard fares. If this occurs, contact the InfoLine on 13 62 13.

Step 4 – Enjoy the ride (but carry secondary ID)

Your TAFE SmartRider is the only proof of tertiary concession Transperth accepts. If you leave your TAFE SmartRider at home, standard fares apply.

Frequently Asked SmartRider Questions

If you’ve registered your SmartRider and it’s lost or stolen we can transfer your remaining balance to your new card. Unfortunately, there’s no protection for unregistered cards. Make sure you let us know as soon as you notice it’s gone so we can hotlist it. For more info go to Lost or Stolen Cards.
How do I tag on and off?
At the start and end of each journey, place your SmartRider card over the picture of the card on a card validator on the bus, on the ferry or at the train station. A beep and green light confirms a successful tag on or tag off. When you tag on, the card reader will display your remaining balance. When you tag off, the card validator will display the amount of the fare deducted and your remaining balance. 

Note: When boarding a bus, passengers can only tag on at the front of the bus. If you tag on at a centre or rear door, you will receive a default fare. When alighting, passengers can tag off at any door.

Autoload enables a direct debit to be made automatically from a nominated bank account or credit card to your SmartRider when the balance on your card falls below the low-value threshold of $6 for standard users and $3 for concession users. Register for Autoload through My Account

If you have a Health Care Card or Pensioner Card you can provide proof of your concession entitlement by showing the card on your phone through Centrelink's Digital Wallet.
A pending action is a change/update that is waiting to be applied to your SmartRider.

Your SmartRider stores information including your concession status, Autoload status and card balance. When we need to update this information, a pending action is created so that the information on the card can be updated.

Pending actions are generally available to your SmartRider the day following their creation, except BPAY which can take several days to become available. For example if you activate Autoload online through My Account today Autoload will be available to be applied to your card tomorrow.

In order to update your card with this new information you are required to tag on. We recommend that you travel within a week of the pending action being created. Alternatively, if you do not need to travel, you can tag on, wait 15 seconds, and then tag off (preferably at any train station).

This will ensure that the update is applied to your SmartRider. If you do not travel/ tag on in the first week, or if it has been over two weeks since you last used the card, it is possible that the pending action will not be applied to your SmartRider on the first try. If this is the case please contact Transperth InfoLine at least one day prior to travelling again, or tag your SmartRider on and off over two to three consecutive days.

Autoload is designed to activate even if the card is new and you have no previous balance on the card, though unfortunately there can be instances where this doesn’t occur. If this happens to you please contact the InfoLine on 13 62 13 or visit an InfoCentre in Perth.
When you tag on under the low value threshold we will add the value of your Autoload onto your card immediately, under the assumption we will be able to get this value from your credit or debit card within the next 24-48 hours. If, for whatever reason, we are unable to access those funds your Autoload will be disabled and the value that was credited to your card will be removed.

In order to add value to your SmartRider balance, you will need to use alternative ‘add value’ methods until you can check your details and reactivate your Autoload.
The SmartRider system is currently a card based system, where the information from your travel is stored on your card. Unfortunately we are unable to keep the Transperth website and app immediately up to date with every transaction that occurs.

The system takes between 12 and 24 hours for your latest transactions and any changes to appear online.
No, this will simply mean that it is no longer linked to that particular My Account.

Any Autoload, SmartParker or Bike Shelter registrations will remain active on the SmartRider card.

If you would like to report your card as lost or stolen and have it hotlisted please contact the InfoLine on 13 62 13.
If you damage or lose your SmartRider you will need to order a new SmartRider.

You will need to go through the same process as when you received your initial SmartRider card.

For example, if your card was issued by your school you will need to speak to your school to order a new one. Or if you ordered your card through the online system you can also order your replacement here.
This expiry date relates to the concession entitlement to the student fare you receive while you are in high school. Once the expiry date passes your SmartRider will revert to a standard SmartRider and you will be charged standard fares.

Before this date you can apply to have a new concession on your card, such as a Health Care Card or tertiary concession if you are continuing your studies at an eligible institution
